Prayer Requests

Boese personal prayer requests, August 2007

  • Glenn is once more focusing on work in the Baptist Mission Hospital, which recently became a regional center for providing subsidized anti-retroviral meds to people infected with HIV (the AIDS virus). Funded by the Elizabeth Glazer Pediatric AIDS Foundation and the US’s AIDS initiative in Africa, a primary goal of the project is to reduce the transmission of the AIDS virus from HIV+ mothers to their children.

    • The hospital laboratory will serve the whole region by providing the required testing--receiving free equipment, reagents, and supplies so these services can be given free of charge. Glenn directs the lab staff as they learn the new procedures, and is developing software to help with record keeping and reporting. Please pray that he will find good ways to reduce the amount of time being consumed to make the multiple entries of data which are currently required by the project.

    • Pray for all the hospital staff as they gear up for this important element now added to their existing AIDS testing and treatment program. The hospital’s outreach to the population is extremely important – AIDS is bound to be on the increase, given the prevalence of HIV in the rebel forces as well as Ferké’s status as a huge trucking town (one way AIDS is spread).

  • Pray for wisdom as we counsel many people who are struggling to make ends meet, and struggling with family issues.

  • We face a calendar full of workshops and meetings – many wonderful opportunities to serve, but also much travel. Please pray for our safety, for our effectiveness in each situation, and for our productivity during the intervening weeks at home in Ferké! Here is a list of upcoming events:

    • Sept. 3-7: Preaching to Senoufo Peoples Workshop, at a retreat center in Ferké. Pastors Moussa Diakité and Josué Koné (from Mali) will be teaching; the Nyarafolo Project is sponsoring the workshop.

    • Sept. 10-14 Sharpening Your Interpersonal Skills workshop, in French, for French-speaking African missionaries and pastors (we will be co facilitating the workshop with Tim and Janet Welch, SIM missionaries) – in Abidjan.

    • Sept. 17-20: Mobile Member Care Team Governing Board meetings in Accra, Ghana (empowering MMCT to do its important work of caring for the missionary community!)

    • Sept. 21-28: Meetings with WorldVenture missionaries that we supervise in Ghana: Sherri Schneidermann with MMCT, and Lloyd and Jan Chinn, language learning and leadership development (in northwest Ghana).

    • Dec. 9-11: West Africa Leadership meetings with our director, Glenn Kendall, in Bamako, Mali.

    For our kids:

    • John is very grateful for his excellent job and work environment and we praise God that he has received a promotion as the Team Leader of the Web and Integrations Teams with Quicken. Please pray that he continues to learn how to best balance his work and family responsibilities and priorities, especially as the family is growing, and that he won’t stretch himself too far.

    • Ian has developed multiple food allergies. Please pray that Marisa and John will be able to find diet solutions for him and the whole family and that Ian will continue to adjust well to his new role of big brother.

    • Pray that Evan will continue to grow and adjust well to his daycare facility, now that his mother is back to work teaching.

    • Marisa has completed her Masters. Please pray that she’ll maintain the strength and energy she needs as a working wife and mother of 2, and that she’ll learn how to balance a life that is becoming increasingly demanding on her time and energy in her multiple roles.

  • Tom and Ariane

    • Pray for their administration of the Casa Soccer League - that God would bless them in their volunteer work to bring inexpensive, good, competitive soccer to Philadelphia, give them wisdom in their administration, and help doors to be opened to them in order to continue running the league smoothly.

    • Tom will receive his PhD from U.Penn this coming spring and is looking for a post doctorate or teaching position for the fall of 2008. Pray that God will direct them to the place he has for Tom and Ariane the next couple of years.

    • Pray that God would lead Ariane as well to what he wants her to do professionally.
    • The funding Tom applied for was denied. Pray that Tom will had the wisdom and the means to finish his research.

  • For Bryn:

    • Bryn returned to the US in April and settled into our Detroit house. He’s been working full-time at A&W as a cook. We are praising the Lord that he found work!

    • His plans to attend community college have been postponed to the winter semester. He is still not sure what major he will pursue, but has a few ideas. Pray that he will grow in his ability to listen – to hear what the Lord is saying to him, as he asks for guidance.

    • In July Bryn was baptized at Shiloh, the Sunday evening church at Highland Park Baptist where he continues to fellowship. He had a wonderful summer with some of his closest friends temporarily in the area. Pray for him as he builds new support groups now that the school year has begun, while maintaining his connections through the Internet, by all accounts one of his favorite activities.

Family News

John, Marisa and Ian Ross

Marisa, our oldest daughter, married John in 2003. They live in Waterford MI, where they bought a house on a corner lot in 2004, big enough for their dog (Butters), two cats (Lady Flirt and Jazz) and a family. On November 25, 2005, Ian MacGregor was born to them – our first grandchild! On April 13, 2007, Evan Slater joined the family. As anyone can tell from these pictures, both of our grandsons are stunningly cute, and by all accounts precocious and precious.
John is a computer programmer; Marisa teaches English literature (and its associated subjects) to mostly tenth grade students at Walled Lake Central High School. Ian and Evan go to daycare just a short distance from the school, where they are doted on by the caregivers and Mom can bop over to see them during her prep hour.

Tom and Ariane Adams

Ariane, second of our three kids, married Thomas Adams II in 2004. They live in Philadelphia PA, in a sixth floor one-bedroom apartment with a chinchilla (Chimichanga) and a greyhound (Kalahari). Besides walking the dog, their extracurricular activities include playing soccer year round and managing a city soccer league, Casa, that they brought into being.
Tom is a Ph.D. candidate in chemical engineering at U. Penn, working daily on research. Ariane is a social worker at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where she works with HIV+ woman and their babies and develops new programs.

Bryn Boese

Lastborn but tallest of all, Bryn will be 21 in October 2007. He spent September 2006—April 2007 in Ferke, where he taught an English club to give the local students valuable experience in oral English. He also used the time as a valuable sabbatical, doing in-depth reading especially in apologetics. Now he is in Detroit, MI, working as a cook at an A&W and preparing to continue his studies at a local community college.
